I think that teachers should start teaching us the real facts about history in the 3rd grade....if i were teaching younger children i would tell them the truth but i wouldnt go as far as tell them that pocahontas was a "hoe" because that wouldnt be appropriate...but there are ways that you can tell them the truth.

I think Andrew Jackson changed democracy by giving more power to the presidential position. First of all, the spoils system allowed to have his people in the government so that nobody would argue with what his decisions were. Secondly, being stubborn and tough, he would not take no for an answer. The Indian Removal Act, for example, was overturned in the Supreme Court, but he still went through with it. And he threatened South Carolina with federal forces if they tried to secessied because of the Tariff of Abominations. Lastly, he established his dominance with the killing of the Bank of the United States. Even though it was eventually renistated, Jackson showed that it was his way or the highway. The country dubbed him "King Jackson I". That is how I think Andrew Jackson changed democracy.

From what I have been told Columbus is the sailor who discoverd the world was not flat by sailing it with a bunch of drunks....That is what I was told when in elementary school and I have never discused it after that...except in middle school I learned a song about him I think...hehe but not real sure how it goes..something about him sailing the ocean blue in 1942....but IDK...So If I am wrong on all I have typed then I do think the dag gum teachers should teach us the REAL crap not a bunch of stuff to feel or heads up just so we will stay awake in class....Whether we like it or not we need to know this stuff...Right Dixon??? So all in favor that thinks all teachers should be like Dixon type I...

ok- so back to an earlier question. if you think that people should always tell you the truth about history, do you think it is ok to tell 5 yr olds about what columbus really did? at what age should you start "telling the truth" about history? is it possible to tell parts of the story and then fill those holes in later? how would you approach it if you taught younger kids?

I also agree with Kayda; however, not 100 percent.
It is true that when we were younger teacher told us false facts, but its not like those teachers made it up. At one point in time they were told thats what they had to teach us. I think that it was not the bright thing to do by teaching us that, but also that it shouldnt be blamed on the teachers.

I agree with Kayda also, i did not know that George washington did not chop down the cherry tree till 7th grade.

what's the point in lying to us about history.
seeing how we're not lyed to about anything else.
because like we showed in class we all remembered.
the little made up stories we were told to this day.
so why couldnt they have told us truthful stories.
so that maybe they would have stuck with us.
just like the untruthful ones did.
that way we would be ahead when we got to where.
we are now in school.

i believe that elementary school teaches should start telling you the TRUE facts about history because it is a proven fact that the younger you start teaching kids the proper facts the better they learn them...i know that it is grand and all to have our little fairy tale stories and all but is that really helping us with the future..i mean come on...they dont start out tellin us that 1 + 1=3 so why should they tell us little fibs in history...i know that it would help me more today if i didnt have all those made up stories in history...thats just how i see it...

ok another thing for you to think about.
one of the things that I try to do is give all of you a more truthful version of history.
is it ok for the teachers you have had in the past (elementary types) to give you a more patriotic version of the past (even if it is incorrect) or should all teachers strive to tell you the truth about everything?
please be specific in your posts.
and i am not demeaning any other teachers you have had, nor do i want you to do so.
i just want to know if it is ok to continue myths in order not to upset the sensibilites of children.

I still don't understand how celebrating it since we can remember has anything to do with why we should celebrate the day and the ethical values of what he did.

But I guess since probably the majority of the USA doesn't even know thats a day or even knows when it is, it doesn't matter because we don't really acknowledge it as a "holiday" anyways

honestly, i couldn't agree more with beck. celebrating columbus day has both positives and negatives.

I have my reasons for celebrating & for not celebrating..

-it was a HUGE part of our history..we wouldnt be where we are today had colombus not "found" america..
i mean im sure someone else would have "discovered" america had he not..but we don't know how much further down the line of history it might have taken them..so that could have set us back a few months..a few years..maybe even a few hundred years..

-on the other hand..the things he done were not ethical..for example..sending innocent indians back to great britain as slaves just to pay back the depts of the voyage..i mean colombus did come to THEIR homeland & take over..so its like the indians were paying for colombus's trip to somewhere he didnt even know where he was..but you can also argue what was said in class about this wasn't wrong doing during the time..it was the ethical thing then..

ughh...Yeah b/c we would get out of school then right?

I definitly do not believe that we should Celebrate Columbus Day!

• Columbus was brave and proved the world was round! -Wrong, back then the Earth was accepted as "round" but what was disputed was the size.
• But he did discover America! -Also wrong, how do you discover land that already has many people living on it, including the Native Americans and Vikings that came to the land many years before the Spainards
• But how can we blame him when he was only carrying out normal practices for his time? -Actually Spain was not a slave trading country until Columbus, desperate to prove the value of his voyage, hauled away Native Americans to be sold as slaves. Columbus started the practice of chopping off the hands of adults who failed to provide a certain amount of gold each month. He was also responsible for setting up slave operations where he literally worked entire tribes of people to death.

Thats why I don't think we should Celebrate this day. Yes I did a little research and I can prove my statements and claims. Columbus wasn't a hero and doesn't deserve a day like The Presidents or MLKJ. That's my opinion!
