good job

ok, so trevor and jake have jumped into the discussion and they both did a good job. anyone else have something to say about either picture?
the american gothic painting was a man and his wife standing in front of a small house....the pitch fork in the mans hand was to symbolize manual labor of the time....the small house is a house in Eldon, Iowa close to where Grant Wood lived....the house is a Gothic revival style house indicated by the top window in the shape of a medeival pointed arch....thats where the name of the painting came from....when he first finished the painting it was revaled at The Art Institue of Chicago he got 3rd place and 300 dollars for it....Trevor Ingle

This was a very unfortunate time for most people….

In the picture you may not have realized but there is only a mother and the children not a father……

I believe this is a symbol that familys were in desperate times and could not bring in a steady income, if they were able to bring in any….

Reconstruction is when the united states wanted to rebuild the nation. The South was a main focus because it was tore to pieces. Particularly the Carolina's and Atlanta because they were burnt during Sherman's March.

The different types of reconstruction consisted of the governmental as well and structural. Also, the relationships had to be rebuilt the North and the South.

They decided to go to the constitution which gives more power to the federal government instead of the states. This was because you had states trading with each other and there were different laws in each state. Also, it was hard for trading to be done because different states were trading with different nations and the trading needed to be done between nations.

dixon, i beleive that we should spend more than one day on the civil war. Mainly because it had a major pat to do in shaping what the us is today.

Do not forget the stuff for the undercover mission on friday.
to answer the last question the congress was already trying to take powers from the executive branch with reconstruction. That showed signs of there being rivalry in the government. The civil war also sparked the south to only vote for democrats when there were a lot of provisions set for the south re-joining the U.S.
well, when talking about the civil war, reconstruction was the time period that rebuilt the south after the devestating war and battles that occured there. Especially with sherman's march to sea where he burned a lot of the south to his march to sea. Including major cities such as: Atlanta and Columbia.

The types of reconstructions were congressional reconstruction which can be related to why they were trying to pass the wade-davis bill. congressional reconstruction was basically a bunch of radical & moderate republican factions who wanted reconstruction to lie in their hands.

Another would be presidential reconstruction, in which, Lincoln wanted to preserve the union and thats when he created the ten percent plan; later carried out by johnson. The Ten percent plan is a plan that only ten percent of confederate soldiers had to sign a paper that they would be loyal and follow any law set before them to bring them back into the union.

-Beast
ok- so we have been talking about the civil war and reconstruction in class. what was reconstruction?
what different types of reconstruction were there?
how did the civil war and reconstruction change the idea of federal and state powers?

some questions for you to ponder and respond to.

I think that teachers should start teaching us the real facts about history in the 3rd grade....if i were teaching younger children i would tell them the truth but i wouldnt go as far as tell them that pocahontas was a "hoe" because that wouldnt be appropriate...but there are ways that you can tell them the truth.

no ya'll got it all wrong this is whats happenin. even andrew jackson wanted this but his body weary.
-jake a.k.a Beast
so did anybody do those test corrections?? :D

no trevor...thats what up

Tuesday, September 25, 2007

this is what andy "by god" jackson gave us!
1. spoils system
2. told chapman to crow........
yes a major insult
by jake a.k.a. beast

I think Andrew Jackson changed democracy by giving more power to the presidential position. First of all, the spoils system allowed to have his people in the government so that nobody would argue with what his decisions were. Secondly, being stubborn and tough, he would not take no for an answer. The Indian Removal Act, for example, was overturned in the Supreme Court, but he still went through with it. And he threatened South Carolina with federal forces if they tried to secessied because of the Tariff of Abominations. Lastly, he established his dominance with the killing of the Bank of the United States. Even though it was eventually renistated, Jackson showed that it was his way or the highway. The country dubbed him "King Jackson I". That is how I think Andrew Jackson changed democracy.
ok- so back to the topic of history. how did andrew jackson change democracy in america?

Monday, September 24, 2007

hey dixion, trevor that is what is down, not up.
O I know I shouldnt be posting on this thing if I dont really know what I am talking about...SO I really cant back my stuff up with facts so ignore all I type if it is wrong....
From what I have been told Columbus is the sailor who discoverd the world was not flat by sailing it with a bunch of drunks....That is what I was told when in elementary school and I have never discused it after that...except in middle school I learned a song about him I think...hehe but not real sure how it goes..something about him sailing the ocean blue in 1942....but IDK...So If I am wrong on all I have typed then I do think the dag gum teachers should teach us the REAL crap not a bunch of stuff to feel or heads up just so we will stay awake in class....Whether we like it or not we need to know this stuff...Right Dixon??? So all in favor that thinks all teachers should be like Dixon type I...
Thank you for you time

who knew, "thats what up?" i've been wondering for days, "what up?" now i know.

ok- so back to an earlier question. if you think that people should always tell you the truth about history, do you think it is ok to tell 5 yr olds about what columbus really did? at what age should you start "telling the truth" about history? is it possible to tell parts of the story and then fill those holes in later? how would you approach it if you taught younger kids?

that should keep you busy.

Monday, September 17, 2007

I also agree with Kayda; however, not 100 percent.
It is true that when we were younger teacher told us false facts, but its not like those teachers made it up. At one point in time they were told thats what they had to teach us. I think that it was not the bright thing to do by teaching us that, but also that it shouldnt be blamed on the teachers.

Sunday, September 16, 2007

I agree with Kayda also, i did not know that George washington did not chop down the cherry tree till 7th grade.

Friday, September 14, 2007

i agree with kayda.
what's the point in lying to us about history.
seeing how we're not lyed to about anything else.
because like we showed in class we all remembered.
the little made up stories we were told to this day.
so why couldnt they have told us truthful stories.
so that maybe they would have stuck with us.
just like the untruthful ones did.
that way we would be ahead when we got to where.
we are now in school.

Thursday, September 13, 2007

okay....
i believe that elementary school teaches should start telling you the TRUE facts about history because it is a proven fact that the younger you start teaching kids the proper facts the better they learn them...i know that it is grand and all to have our little fairy tale stories and all but is that really helping us with the future..i mean come on...they dont start out tellin us that 1 + 1=3 so why should they tell us little fibs in history...i know that it would help me more today if i didnt have all those made up stories in history...thats just how i see it...

Kayda*
ok another thing for you to think about.
one of the things that I try to do is give all of you a more truthful version of history.
is it ok for the teachers you have had in the past (elementary types) to give you a more patriotic version of the past (even if it is incorrect) or should all teachers strive to tell you the truth about everything?
please be specific in your posts.
and i am not demeaning any other teachers you have had, nor do i want you to do so.
i just want to know if it is ok to continue myths in order not to upset the sensibilites of children.

Tuesday, September 11, 2007

oh yeah, dixon..remember to do the bag of crap or whatever it was.

:D
I think wanting to celebrate something just because we get out of school [which I know we don't] is stupid anyway.
So either way, I don't think we should celebrate it.
who wants to celebrate someone who killed, raped, enslaved, hurt and took other people's land?

Sunday, September 09, 2007

I definately think we should celebrate Columbus day

...who wouldnt want a day off of school!!!!

Although he isnt the person to discover America he was a very brave man..and i know a lot of people prolly think that he was a curel person but he wasnt doing anything different from anyone else in his time...everyone was tryin to conquer the "new" worlds...so how can you blame him????
All I have to say is this:
How are we supposed to celebrate something if we're in school??

Saturday, September 08, 2007

yeah i dont really care weather or not we celabrate cause for now we do and it dont look like its changin for a long time so its whatever for me

Thursday, September 06, 2007

Okay since Dixon posted it and we discussed it in class - WE DON'T GET COLUMBUS DAY OFF! okay look on those student calenders in the handbook.

I still don't understand how celebrating it since we can remember has anything to do with why we should celebrate the day and the ethical values of what he did.

But I guess since probably the majority of the USA doesn't even know thats a day or even knows when it is, it doesn't matter because we don't really acknowledge it as a "holiday" anyways

Samantha*
BUT IF WE DID GET OUT OF SCHOOL FOR IT, then that'd be all the more reason to celebrate it.
I think we should because weve been doing it since i can remember. Like some other people said, its a day out of school. (Not that it matters)

Dixions the Man
I have some intresting facts about George Washington:

He was the only president who did not live in Washington D.C.
The nation's capital, along with 1 state, 31 counties and 17 cities (Maybe 18 counting the town of "George," in central Washington State) are named in his honor.
As a farmer, Washington grew marijuana on his farm and promoted it's growth. (In the 1790s, the crop was grown mainly for its industrial value as hemp and for soil stabilization. It was many years later that the recreational and illegal use of marijuana became popular.)
As a farmer, he is credited with introducing the mule to America.
He was the first Mason to serve as president.
He was the only president to win a unanimous vote of the Electoral College.
Washington's 2nd inaugural address was the shortest ever delivered - 135 words.

About.com
anyone else have anything to say about this?
ok- just for the record, you don't get out of school for columbus day.
honestly, i couldn't agree more with beck. celebrating columbus day has both positives and negatives.

if it all came down to it, celebrate it. it's a day out of school ;]

Wednesday, September 05, 2007

I have my reasons for celebrating & for not celebrating..

-it was a HUGE part of our history..we wouldnt be where we are today had colombus not "found" america..
i mean im sure someone else would have "discovered" america had he not..but we don't know how much further down the line of history it might have taken them..so that could have set us back a few months..a few years..maybe even a few hundred years..

-on the other hand..the things he done were not ethical..for example..sending innocent indians back to great britain as slaves just to pay back the depts of the voyage..i mean colombus did come to THEIR homeland & take over..so its like the indians were paying for colombus's trip to somewhere he didnt even know where he was..but you can also argue what was said in class about this wasn't wrong doing during the time..it was the ethical thing then..
ughh...Yeah b/c we would get out of school then right?

Tuesday, September 04, 2007

I definitly do not believe that we should Celebrate Columbus Day!

  • Columbus was brave and proved the world was round! -Wrong, back then the Earth was accepted as "round" but what was disputed was the size.
  • But he did discover America! -Also wrong, how do you discover land that already has many people living on it, including the Native Americans and Vikings that came to the land many years before the Spainards
  • But how can we blame him when he was only carrying out normal practices for his time? -Actually Spain was not a slave trading country until Columbus, desperate to prove the value of his voyage, hauled away Native Americans to be sold as slaves. Columbus started the practice of chopping off the hands of adults who failed to provide a certain amount of gold each month. He was also responsible for setting up slave operations where he literally worked entire tribes of people to death.

Thats why I don't think we should Celebrate this day. Yes I did a little research and I can prove my statements and claims. Columbus wasn't a hero and doesn't deserve a day like The Presidents or MLKJ. That's my opinion!

Samantha*

should we celebrate columbus day? why or why not?

a couple of guidelines:
1. please back up your answers with facts, etc...
2. if you quote a site, please reference that site, a simple link will suffice
3. this is a public blog, don't put anything up on it that you wouldn't mind your parents, your pastor, or people at the county office seeing.
4. this is a learning tool, not a forum for you to insult people.

all that said, we can have fun and learn something in the process if you will post

What if the Iranians invaded us?
so no one agrees with my proposition of an Iranian Invasion?
thats going to be you in ten years justin. fat, stupid, lame, and lip singing your heart out to the theme song from a horrible movie to a girl whos inevitably going to put it on the internet. for shame. not to mention you will be stupid enough to: 1) tape it. 2) give her the tape instead of just showing her.

and by her i mean joseph!

..... and no one answered my questions last time, so I'll axe 'em again:

1) Nintendo planned to make a CD periphial for the Super NES, and teamed with what company to develop this? However after betraying that company, they signed with what rival company to make this drive (before scratching the whole project altogether)?
2) What were the following console's codenames: Dreamcast, N64, and X-Box
3) Who trained Darth Sidious?
4) Who is Darth Bane?

... please....
